CranioSacral Therapy is a type of alternative healing which uses a gentle method of detection and correction that encourages your own natural healing mechanisms (energy) to transform the negative effects of stress on your central nervous system. You will also benefit from better overall health and resistance to dis-ease by receiving regular treatments. CST is a wonderful form of alternative healing. Like the pulse of the cardiovascular system, the craniosacral system has a rhythm that can be felt throughout the body. Using a touch generally no heavier than the weight of a nickel, skilled practitioners can monitor this rhythm at key body points to pinpoint the source of an obstruction or stress. The therapist gently coaxes your body into restoring its natural craniosacral rhythm by releasing fascial restrictions in the diaphragms of the physical body and assisting the hydraulic force of the fluid to flow in sync between the cranium and the sacrum.
The craniosacral system consists of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord, and the nerves. It extends from the bones of the skull, face and mouth, which make up the cranium, down to the sacrum or tailbone area. Since this vital system influences the development and performance of the brain and spinal cord, an imbalance or restriction in the craniosacral system could potentially cause any number of sensory, motor or neurological disabilities. Some of the issues craniosacral therapy helps:
- Migraines and Headaches
- Chronic Neck and Back Pain
- Motor Coordination Impairments
- Stress and Tension Related Problems
- Infantile Disorders
- Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries
- Chronic Fatigue
- Scoliosis
- Central Nervous System Disorders
- Emotional Difficulties
- Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)
- Learning Disabilities
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
- Orthopedic Problems
- and many other conditions
There are certain situations where application of CST would not be recommended. These include conditions where a variation and/or slight increase in intracranial pressure would cause instability. Acute aneurysm, cerebral hemorrhage or other pre-existing severe bleeding disorders are examples of conditions that could be affected by small intracranial pressure changes.
This CranioSacral Therapy system was developed by ostopathic physician and researcher John E. Upledger, D.O., O.M.M. nearly 25 years ago. He has written three textbooks detailing the functioning of this system and two books which explain this therapy to the public. He is President of the Upledger Institute in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, which is recognized worldwide for its groundbreaking continuing-education programs, clinical research and therapeutic services.
"Throughout his career as an osteopathic physician, Dr. Upledger has been recognized as an innovator and leading proponent in the investigation of new therapies. His development of CranioSacral Therapy in particular has earned him an international reputation. He has also served on the Alternative Medicine Program Advisory Council for the Office of Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health in Washington, D.C.
Although much of his experience has been garnered through private clinical practice, Dr. Upledger served from 1975-1983 as a clinical researcher and Professor of Biomechanics at Michigan State University. During those years he supervised a team of anatomists, physiologists, biophysicists and bioengineers in experiments testing the existence and influence of the craniosacral system. The results of those scientific studies explained the function of the craniosacral system and its use in evaluating and treating poorly understood malfunctions of the brain and spinal cord. Dr. Upledger went on to develop CranioSacral Therapy and other complementary modalities that are now taught worldwide to healthcare professionals through The Upledger Institute's educational programs. He has also written numerous textbooks and study guides, and more than two dozen research articles."

CST sessions are conducted with the person fully clothed lying on a massage table. This therapy is very relaxing and lasts approximately an hour. Some people feel very relaxed even to the point of falling asleep, some feel the changes taking place within their tissues immediately. And some people will feel the shift gradually over a period of a few days. Each person's experience is very specific as we are all unique individuals having unique experiences.
